Google Maps Starts Testing AR-Powered Navigation

Now reports suggest that the company is testing the feature with a small group of Local Guides.

At Google I/O 2018, we had a first look at Google Maps AR features.

Google gave The Wall Street Journal early access access to the AR mode feature, and the publication took it for a spin to test out its capabilities.

The AR feature is supposed to pop-ups names of surrounding businesses from the location, even has a fox guide to help the user navigate in the real-world by relying on the AR element on the map. The feature is claimed to offer better navigation and identification of nearby places.

More specifically, this new feature uses imagery from your camera along with location data to match your position via Google Street View, and with this information, is able to overlay visual cues such as arrows on your live camera feed. As to how to get started, just hit the Start AR button.

Tech giants like Apple, Facebook, Google, North, Vuzix and others have all been working on, or are selling their own AR glasses, meaning that Google's new feature could eventually make its way into your line of sight, the report added. On the bottom of the screen, you can find regular overhead maps. The AR system asks the user to move his/her phone around to determine the exact location. As it's not just a great idea, but also may be risky.

He described how the feature worked - the app picks up a person's location via Global Positioning System (GPS), and then uses Street View data to narrow it down to the exact location. The system too reportedly warns users against this. Google also cautions that the feature is to be used for directions while walking and not to be used while driving, due to obvious distractions.
