On February 11, 1979, Iran's army declared its neutrality, paving the way for the fall of US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday commemorated the 40th anniversary of the 1979 revolution, calling it an event that saved the country "from tyranny, colonisation and dependence", reported Al Jazeera.

Iran "will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa" to the ground if Washington attacks the Islamic Republic, a commander for its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said earlier Monday to mass crowds celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution, according to Russian news channel Sputnik.

"We do not and we will not ask permission for producing any type of missiles from anybody", Rouhani said from Tehran Monday, though he stressed that Iran would "continue constructive engagement" with the worldwide community.

The leaders spoke at a rally marking 40 years since the Islamic revolution, a political natural disaster that ended millennia of monarchy and still reverberates around the region.

Trump´s chief foreign policy adviser said on Monday the Islamic revolution inflicted four decades of "failure and broken promises" on the country.

"We have not asked and will never ask anyone for permission to increase our defence capabilities and to build all kinds of missiles, be they surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles or ground-to-ground missiles", the Iranian leader said.

But he remained defiant on Monday as Iranians recalled the end of a monarch who catered to the rich.

Yadollah Javani, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' deputy head for political affairs, said Iran would demolish cities in Israel if the United States attacked.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the threat. "If this regime makes the bad mistake and tries to destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa, it will not succeed, but it will be the last Revolution Day that they will celebrate. Now it´s up to the Iranian regime to change its behavior, & ultimately up to the Iranian people to determine the direction of their country", John Bolton tweeted.

Khomeini returned from exile in France two weeks after the Shah and his wife fled to Aswan, Egypt.

A pre-prepared resolution was read out ahead of his speech that proclaimed "unquestioning obedience to the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei" and called US President Donald Trump an "idiot".

"The world saw when Iran made a decision to help people of Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Yemen, they achieved victory".
