The Wise County Messenger reported that deputies responded to reports of a domestic disturbance about 7:20 a home near Rhome.

The two oldest children, four and five years old, were locked in the dog cage, according to CNN.

Johnson said food was kept just out of reach of the children in a refrigerator that had three straps on it to lock it. There were three boys, ages 5, 3 and 1, and a 4-year-old girl, he said.

Deputies were speaking with a man and a woman, both 24, when they heard children's voices coming from the barn, Akin said. Both are charged with four counts of child endangerment.

Two of the children were found locked in a cage in a barn on the family's rural property.

Authorities discovered the children Tuesday living in a barn.

Akin says two of the children were inside, but that the deputies found two more in an outbuilding, crammed into the 3-by-3 feet (90-by-90 centimeter) cage.

"The four children have been taken to Cook's (Children's Medical Center) in Fort Worth to be examined", Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said Tuesday in a telephone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. However, they were inside of locked cabinets with no way for the children to unlock them. A hospital spokeswoman declined to disclose their conditions.

A fight between the two is what brought deputies to the rural home, and the man had cuts to his face.
