Sen. Feinstein Dismisses Youth Activists' Call for Green New Deal

In a video posted on Facebook by Sunrise Movement, a youth climate-change advocacy group, more than a dozen children and several adults meet with the senator to present her a letter they wrote and ask her to vote "yes" on the deal.

"Well, it's not going to get turned around in 10 years", Feinstein responded. "I don't know the details".

"Like I just introduced Green New Deal two weeks ago and it's created creating all of this conversation. Why?"

More broadly, the video, and how quickly it became viral and ignited debate, highlights how the Green New Deal issue could become divisive for Democrats. Ed Markey and Rep. Alexandria Ocasico-Cortez, aims to convert the entire USA economy to renewable energy within 12 years, while also sparking a massive burst of job-creation and technological innovation. When the girl responds that she is 16, Feinstein says, "Well you didn't vote for me".

Elon Musk ordered to tell judge why he's not in contempt
Securities regulators have asked that Musk be held in contempt for violating the terms of a settlement agreement. It also is not clear how Musk's public criticism of the SEC might weigh on his fate.

Sunrise Movement, an organization which describes itself as wanting to "stop climate change", shared a clip of the exchange on their Twitter page Friday. At the end, she offers one of the students an internship.

The senator also touted her years of experience, at one point noting the children in the room were not old enough to vote for her. "So people are like 'oh it's unrealistic, oh it's vague, oh it doesn't address this little, minute thing.' And I'm like you try, you do it".

About 100 people had rallied outside Feinstein's office Friday, including students from Oakland Unified School District, where classes are canceled due to a teacher strike this week. "Her reaction is why young people desperately want new leadership in Congress", the tweet with the video said. She added, "I've been in the Senate for a quarter of a century, and I know what can pass, and I know what can't pass".

It was clear from the tone of Feinstein's response that the six-term senator thought the ambitious strategy - in line with what climate science says is necessary to avert 1.5 degrees C of warming - is too heavy of a political lift. Feinstein repeatedly tells the children that there is "no way to pay" for the plan, and tells the children that she is supporting her own resolution.

There, one young activist explained that they were "trying to ask you to vote yes on the Green New Deal", legislation proposed by Sen.

"You know what's interesting about this group?" "I have been and remain committed to doing everything I can to enact real, meaningful climate change legislation".

Feinstein said the Green New Deal would not pass the Republican-dominated Senate. The congresswoman joined climate change activists in a protest outside the office of now-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) during the very first day of her freshman orientation on Capitol Hill back in November.
