A potentially deadly measles outbreak has hit New Zealand's South Island with more than 20,000 vaccines brought in as authorities warn the disease is now circulating widely.

"Those aged between 29 and 50 will only have had one measles vaccination and are not considered immune".

People are contagious from four days before they get the rash to four days after it appears and should seek medical treatment and isolate themselves at home. Early symptoms can include a fever, a cough and a headache.
