Officials reported eight more child deaths tied to the ongoing flu season to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week, bringing the total to 64 as of March 2. But that strain has been present - and vigorous in Nebraska for most of this flu season.

Last flu season, the rate of flu-like illness in the state reached its height around Christmas at more than 12 percent.

Last week, about 60 percent of the flu virus samples tested were the more troublesome strain, known as Type A H3N2.

Health officials do expect to see flu numbers go down in the next two to three weeks.

However, not all flu-related deaths are detected or reported, so the CDC believes the actual number of deaths to be higher.

Since Oct. 2 of a year ago, as many as 26.3 million people have caught the flu, resulting in up to 347,000 hospitalizations and 31,200 deaths, according to the CDC.

They also stress other ways to prevent the flu like washing your hands and cleaning high-frequented areas with antimicrobial agents.
