The space station's three-member crew greeted the capsule last Sunday, with USA astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques entering Crew Dragon's cabin to carry out air quality tests and inspections.

SpaceX has completed the first flight of a commercial spaceship created to fly people.

SpaceX launched the private spacecraft on March 2 atop a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Last Saturday, SpaceX launched its new Crew Dragon spaceship designed for NASA astronauts toward the International Space Station (ISS), where the vehicle docked on March 3.

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be in the market for a new quarterback, but that doesn't mean they are cutting Blake Bortles loose. The former Buckeye didn't really work out in Jacksonville, however, as the Jaguars season quickly unravelled unexpectedly.

About 6 hours after departing the space station, Crew Dragon splashed down at 8:45 a.m. EST approximately 230 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. SpaceX's Go Searcher recovery ship participated in retrieving the capsule.

"Today's successful, splashdown of the SpaceX Demo-1 Crew Dragon capsule after its mission to the ISS marked another milestone in a new era of human spaceflight", NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote in a tweet. Shuttles took American astronauts to space from 1981 to 2011, but their cost proved prohibitive, while two of the original four craft had catastrophic accidents, killing 14 crew members. The Dragon linked with the station autonomously, being the first American spacecraft ever to do so in this manner.

The Dragon pulled away from the station early Friday, and an Atlantic Ocean splashdown is expected Friday morning.

The launch systems are aimed at ending USA reliance on Russian Soyuz rockets for $80 million-per-seat rides to the $100 billion orbital research laboratory, which flies about 250 miles (400 km) above earth. "You see the light from the atmosphere as it heats up", astronaut Bob Behnken said of re-entry.

Crew Dragon carried a passenger on this flight test - a lifelike test device named Ripley, which was outfitted with sensors to provide data about potential effects on humans traveling in the spacecraft.

Next in line is a test that will take place in June and will target Crew Dragon's emergency escape system.

Demonstration Mission-1 (Demo-1) was an uncrewed flight test created to demonstrate a new commercial capability developed under NASA's Commercial Crew Program.

It represents the first private space mission to the ISS, as well as the first time a space vessel capable of carrying people was launched by the USA in eight years. "Our NASA and SpaceX teams worked seamlessly not only in the lead-up to the flight but in how we managed the flight", said Steve Stich, deputy manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program.

Only a test dummy was aboard for the test, but the first manned flight aboard Dragon is scheduled for July with two astronauts - a date that could be postponed until later this year.
