Pi Day: Google calculates most accurate value of Pi

They made their announcement today, on Pi day which falls on March 14th, or 3.14, the USA format of the date, in its most basic form.

Emma spent four months working on the project in which she calculated pi to 31.4 trillion digits.

Iwao, a computer scientist and software engineer whose official title is cloud developer advocate, used y-cruncher, a program created by USA software developer Alexander J. Yee that has been used in many previous pi record breakings. For today's Pi day Google developer, Emma Haruka Iwao, has set a Guinness World Record for the most accurate value of Pi. It's almost nine trillion digits more than the previous world record set by Peter Trueb in November 2016. "When I was a kid, I downloaded a program to calculate pi on my computer", she says.

Company employee Emma Haruka Iwao, here, used an application called y-cruncher on 25 Google Cloud virtual machines.

Opportunity rover left us with one last lovely panorama of Mars
There was little NASA could do to save the Opportunity rover once the dust storm on Mars swallowed almost the entire planet. The trailblazing mission ended after almost 15 years of exploring the surface of Mars, but its legacy will live on.

"We use Pi for everything in our daily lives - designing buildings, building bridges, highways", Iwao said in a video about her achievement. You calculate it by dividing a circle's circumference by its diameter. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number and it continues infinitely without repetition or pattern. The semi-official holiday for the unique number is celebrated by eating actual pies.

When I think of pi, I think of three digits: 3.14.

"It was my childhood dream, a longtime dream, to break the world record for pi", Iwao said.

Beyond being a convenient way to promote Google's own cloud products, Iwao's record shows how far cloud computing technology has come.

Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen: Order a homemade chicken pot pie in the restaurant, or one to-go, and receive a second one for free. As you may remember from your old geometry class, 3.14 is the shortened version of the mathematical constant known as pi.

Her former professor and one time world record holder for pi, Daisuke Takahashi, helped her with advice and technical strategies.

Google have said that it is not just a significant milestone for their "Google Cloud infrastructure but for mathematical computing overall".

"In terms of how long this record might stand, we can't predict the future".
