However, not all Verizon subscribers will be able to get on 5G come April 11th, which is when Big Red's 5G service officially launches.

The offer is available only on unlimited plans, which now start at $75 for one person without 5G. To use the 5G service at launch, you'll have to pay $50 for "the Verizon-exclusive 5G Moto Mod", which can be attached to a Motorola Moto Z3, a phone that Verizon sells for $480. That means a single Above Unlimited line with 5G access will cost $105 a month with a $5 Auto Pay discount.

And network access will initially work with just one phone, Motorola's Moto Z3, with a special 5G attachment. Buying the $85 plan lets a customer use at least 22GB a month before facing possible slowdowns, while the $95 plan comes with 75GB before possible slowdowns. When asked if de-prioritization will be applied to future 5G devices and cities, Verizon told Ars, "we haven't determined that yet".

As the battle for "first to 5G" heats up among the Big Four wireless carriers in the United States, it appears Verizon is taking the lead.

"Minneapolis will see a similar concentration, focused on the Downtown West, Downtown East, and Elliot Park areas of the city, with a focus on landmarks like the Minneapolis Convention Center as well as the Target Center and U.S. Bank Stadium sports venues, along with the Verizon store in the Mall of America."

"If adding 5G service is a significant step-up from 4G, then $10 is a reasonable customer expectation", King said. As announced a year ago, the Moto Mod is essentially a detachable 5G antenna for the Moto Z3.

AT&T Corp and Sprint Corp are also building their 5G networks and plan to release 5G smartphones with Samsung Electronics later this year.

AT&T has a version of 5G service available to hotspot devices in parts of 12 cities today with seven more markets coming by midyear. The first 5G-enabled smartphone to accompany the service is the Motorola moto z3 with the 5G moto mod, which will be available for pre-order on March 14.
