Aviation authority bans Boeing 737 MAX flights in Russian airspace

As analysis of the air tragedy gets underway in Paris, the French air accident investigation authority, known by its French acronym BEA, shared an image of the mangled flight data recorder.

Meanwhile, Boeing recommended a temporary suspension of the "entire global fleet" of the 737 MAX aircraft on Wednesday.

After last year's Lion Air disaster, Boeing issued guidance to pilots on how to manage the 737-Max's new computer-controlled stability system. The crash killed 157, including three Russians.

However, the US Federal Aviation Administration has declared the 737 Max 8 airworthy.

It follows the decision by the US Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily ban the jet from US airspace - joining more than 50 countries which had already done the same.

A software fix for the 737 Max that Boeing has been working on since the Lion Air crash will take months to complete, the FAA said on Wednesday.

The FAA says it is assisting the NTSB with the investigation into the crash of Flight 302 and that the grounding of the MAX aircraft will remain in effect until the examination of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders is complete.

The low-priced carrier, a launch customer of the MAX 8 in 2017, said it was servicing those flights with available 737-700s and 737-800s.

Southwest and American each said on Thursday they were flying empty MAX aircraft to be parked at different maintenance locations during the ban.

On Monday, Boeing said a software update for 737 Max aircraft, which was put into development before the Ethiopia Airlines crash, is due in April.

By the end of January, Boeing had delivered 350 of the Max 8 models.

He also noted that investigators have not yet drawn a clear link between the system that malfunctioned prior to the Lion Air crash and the Ethiopia accident.

The delayed flight ET302 took off from Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa at 08:38 local time (05:38 GMT) and was bound for Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The accounts of the recent crashes were echoed in concerns registered by USA pilots on how the MAX 8 behaves.

Boeing was criticised after the Lion Air crash for allegedly failing to adequately inform 737 pilots about the functioning of the stall prevention system.

Though it maintains the planes are safe, Boeing has supported the FAA move.

"This safety notice restricts commercial passenger flights from any air operator, both domestic and foreign, of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 aircraft from arriving, departing or overflying Canadian airspace", he said.
