He seems like a guy who knows how to say what his audience wants to hear.

Beto O'Rourke, who gave Ted Cruz a run for his money in his race for the U.S. Senate in 2018, announced he's entering the presidential race.

O'Rourke is expected to immediately set out on a campaign swing through Iowa, which holds the first Democratic nominating contest in February 2020.

Vanity Fair quoted O'Rourke as saying in an interview published on Wednesday that he was aware of his disadvantage as a white man at a time when many in the Democratic Party want a woman or a person of color for president.

Unlike many of his opponents who launched campaigns while barely registering in public opinion polls, O'Rourke begins in sixth place in the RealClearPolitics average of polls, receiving an average of 5 percent.

O'Rourke, whose given name is Robert Francis, acquired his nickname while growing up in El Paso, Texas.

With his presidential effort, O'Rourke is hoping to leverage the fame he gained with his Senate race.

Greeted by cheers when he arrived early Thursday at an event in Keokuk, Iowa, O'Rourke told the crowd it was his first visit ever to their state.
