Microsoft Brings Xbox Live to iOS and Android

It's called Game Stack and it means Azure, PlayFab, DirectX, Visual Studio, Xbox Live, App Center, and Havok will be offered as an ecosystem to work within on the platform of your choice, be that Xbox and Windows, or mobile devices, PlayStation, or Switch.

Rumors have been swirling for some time that Nintendo and Microsoft were up to "something" and while it was initially rumored that GamePass was headed to the Switch, Xbox Live integration may make a bit more sense.

Microsoft has revealed more information about Xbox Live coming to both Android and iOS devices.

However deeply the developers choose to integrate Xbox Live into their games, the users will be able to access all of them with a single Microsoft Account sign-in.

The change reflects Facebook's changing audience and continued problems with serving as a conduit for misinformation and vitriol. These apps have been distinct until recently, when Zuckerberg announced plans to unify them under with a new focus on privacy.

"Today, we're excited for Xbox Live to become part of Microsoft Game Stack, providing identity and community services".

Microsoft spoke with in advance of the announcement to simply state: "Our goal is to unite the two billion gamers", Microsoft CVP of Gaming Cloud Kareem Choudhry said.

Last month it was suggested that Microsoft was preparing to expand the reach of Xbox Live to include many more platforms, including those of its competitors. That includes includes a trusted identity network based on Microsoft accounts, a frictionless integration for developers (Xbox Live-enabled games were notoriously hard to develop in the Windows 8/Windows Phone era due to Microsoft's strict guidelines), as well as many ways to keep mobile gamers engaged with achievements, crossplay, and more. It gives developers a back-end platform to build, launch and manage games. While this is definitely true, it remains to be seen if mobile developers will prefer Microsoft's tools over others those already provided by Facebook or Google. At the moment, however, there's no sign of Xbox Live for Switch as yet. It seems unlikely that will ever happen, but never say never.
