Before the Senate voted on terminating Trump's national emergency, he told reporters, "I'll probably have to veto it", and predicted his veto wouldn't be overturned by Congress.

"Today I am vetoing this resolution".

Alexander added that he shares the president's goal of border security, but warned allowing Trump to redirect money without authorization could set a unsafe precedent. The House is not expected to have the two-thirds of the chamber's support needed to override the President's veto.

In declaring an emergency on February 15, Trump cited drug smuggling across the border from Mexico (misleading), the drop in crime in El Paso, Texas, after a partial border barricade was built there (not true) and reports of women kidnapped, bound with tape and trafficked into the United States across unguarded sections of the border (no evidence exists of this).

The Senate passed its resolution 59-41, with 12 Republicans including Mitt Romney and Marco Rubio voting for it, prompting a one-word Trump tweet in response.

The renegade conservatives had condemned the emergency declaration for setting up a unsafe precedent for a president while emphasising that they still agreed with Mr Trump's tough border security policies.

Mr Trump had declared the emergency in February after Congress refused his requests for $5.7bn (£4.4bn) to construct a border wall - a campaign promise.

The bipartisan vote in the Senate on Thursday approving the measure was a slap at Trump over his decision to circumvent Congress and take money already designated for other programs to pay for his barrier along the U.S. -Mexico border.
