The Model Y is based on the smallest vehicle in Tesla's range, the $35,000 Model 3, which Mr Musk hopes will bring electric motoring to the mass market. It will start at $47,000. He also says it will have slightly less range from the same battery pack as the Model 3, which is rated for 220 miles with a full charge in the least-expensive Standard Range and 325 in the Long Range version. This variant will sacrifice 20 miles of range from the Long Range in favor of improved performance. Pricing will start at $51,000. Looking all the world like a crossover version of the Model 3 that it's based on, it will eventually be offered in an array of models similar to the sedan's, from a $39,000 standard edition to a performance version that can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and costs $60,000. Test rides of the Model Y are also in store. It has been priced from $60,000. During a conference call with investors back in January, Musk said he expects demand for the Model Y to be larger than that for the Model 3.
